The complete neon name of this Centre Street liquor store is Eliot's Macys Liquors, perhaps to eliminate any confusion with the better known department store, perhaps to eliminate any confusion with the other liquor store in Allston that used to be called Macy's until the department store told them to knock it off. That's a matter of opinion. Today, the retail climate is one of low margins and no service. Gimbels projected quality merchandise, low prices, great service. Americans didn't know it at the time, but they shopped at the last great American vertical retailer. Today, they have to drive long distances, being fooled with low prices, always. They didn't have to lower their standards when they shopped Gimbels. They were treated like royalty.
