On the corner of K and 4th st there was a clothes store, it was right by Slocum's toy store. Can some one help me out?

jackie on December 21, 2003 01:48 AM.

No clothes store at K and 4th, only Fire Station, a Pub, bakery and housing. Maybe your thinking of K and Broadway. Its called Jones Department Store.

I'm writing a paper about Boston English. Does Southie have its own words or expressions that are different, say, from Dorchester, or other neighborhoods?

hey...be proud to irish, be proud to be from Southie but don't be proud of the ganster life style that it had. you all sound like a bunch of ganster wanna be's with how you talk. grow up, educate yourselves. educate yourself about your own town. read a book...there are a few good ones out there. stop this "anti movement" talk...it's bullshit. the busing years are over...no need to rally. you will only get yourselves in trouble, trust me...you'll sink. i'm irish catholic, too. born and raised in Quincy,"God's Country" as far as i'm concerned. the same way you feel about Southie, i know. read a book and even start with "All Souls". written by a guy who grew up right there where you are now.Michael Patrick MacDonald. let him tell you a story. maybe you'll see a different light.

marita ann on September 17, 2004 11:44 AM.

I just finished reading "All Souls", and it opened my Irish Eyes. I think everyone in Southie should read the book and learn from the experiences of those that lived there before you were a glint in your mothers eyes, and those that died long before they should have!

The non-Irish can say what they will about Southie- and I'll admit that it has its negative sides-- but Southie represents the last true Irish neighborhood in the United States. Every irishman in the country aware of his heritage knows that the Irish experience in America flows through NYC and Boston, and southie is the only remnant of the old times. Non-irish-- if you don't like Southie, stay out of Southie. The irish in america love southie.

Padraic on October 18, 2004 02:08 PM.

I went to school with a bunch of Southie kids and some are decent kids but for the most part you all think and act like your black, so u shouldn't be talking about Irish pride or any of that. Southie used to be a good place when the kids acted white and had true pride. Now i see a bunch of trash with straight brimmed hats running around listening to rap and acting like gangsters. Your neighborhood should go back to the way it was.

i am an irish catholic girl, born and raised in the boston area, and i have mixed feelings about southie. i am SOOOO PROUD to be irish, its such a huge part of my identity, and its great that my irish brothers and sisters are holding it together down there (im just north of boston, stuck in the suburbs). i read All Souls by Michael Patrick MacDonald, though, and it changed my views, because even though sticking together and having such brilliant irish pride is a beautiful thing, the drugs and gangs only tear us apart. its a shame to see good catholic boys strung out on drugs when they oughta be in school or out supporting their families; thats how the irish do it, and something went wrong in southie if proud irish families are torn down by crime and hate. love for the irish, and for what southie could be, but i dont want gangsters messing up my Little Ireland in south boston.

I was born in Connemara and moved to Southie at the age of 2. Since then I've spent about 1/2 of my life in Southie, with the rest being spent in Connemara. The homophobic talk listed here is typical of Southie. I'm gay, and yet I've had American idiot after American idiot tell me that being gay "isn't Irish" and that I need to go back to the "old country" and get "straightened out." Ironically, people in Connemara are much less homophobic than those in Southie.

Lastly, if you're planning on insulting me, please do so in grammatically correct English or Gaelic (as opposed to the ridiculous imitation Ebonics I'm reading here).

Mary on December 12, 2004 07:21 PM.

Hey, Mary please getta a grip. Southie is no more homophobic than the resta the country. Matta a fact, they ahr less homophobic than say Walla Walla, WA.
My grandmother was born in Rock Chapel, Cork, Ireland and she had a thing about gay people. She told us that there wasn't any of those kind of people in Ireland. I guess she was wrong.

Reading this is hysterical...You're all trying to stay true to Southie and keep it the way it is, but to tell you the truth you're just making it look bad. Maybe if you want to stay in Southie you should go to school, learn some proper English, and get a job so you can keep the place your living in and keep the so called "yuppies" out of it. In todays world you have to have money to pay rent not just your Irish background and street credit.

Excuse me. Not all of us were born with a golden spoon in our mouths or handed everything to us by our Mommy's and Daddy's. I am a college educated student of an Ivy League school of Boston and earned my way there by hard work, a full time job since the age of 16, and have always staying true to my native home. There is nothing wrong with Dorchester, Southie, or any of the other neighboring towns around us. Grant it, we all have our feuds and town rivalries as you all do out there. Also, just to clarify, not all of us are Irish, though many are, and those who actually care about "street credit" are the ones who need to learn how to grow up. (And Southie is not the only place in which that exists.) How about you wake up to America and the issues that surround what is going on in our world today because of hatred, biggotry, and poverty. You should use some of your Connecticut money out of your "village" home, with your beamer in your driveway and golden retriever in your front yard which you pay others to mow, and put it to good use such as the education of this country. Thank you. Originally from Dorchester and proud of it!

I was raised in Cambridge and Boston.
I was born in Portugal. I went to Boston in 1968.

From what I know about Southie is Irish Trash Americans that proclaim that they are the only white race in America.

I live in England and the Irish Immigrants are completely different that the Irish Americans, they are human and friendly and not white racist trash.

The Irish Americans think that they are GOD'S gift to humanity.

If that is the case then how come you people were under British Rule for nearly 600 years.

In America you are nothing but potato heads.

They only good Irish American that I know is JFK.

Carlos Barbosa on September 22, 2005 05:57 PM.

It's not the Irish way to be racist, that's the English, protestant way.
The Irish are an EXTREAMLY proud race, I myself am Scottish but have visited Southie and was amazed at the Irish connection so far from the old country. Keep it up and never change.

alright...everyone is entitled to their own opinion about southie, but dont rant about it like its a fact. i was born and raised in southie and ill always love it. about the racism, its just that we are such a close IRISH community and we want to keep it that way. its not just southie thats like that at all. every town wants to keep it how it has always been. drugs are bad, but what do you expect when there isnt exactly much to do in southie besides that? kids grow up around it. its all they know. if you want to change that shit, you change the parents, no the kids. Oh, and that "b" person from June 21st, some college student who doesnt know its "granted" not "grant it". real successful guy. oh yah and fuck the yuppies and all those other people who are taking over the bricks. i aint even 21 yet and i know shits changed. used to be able to sit on your steps all hours and not have to worry about SHIT. now im afraid to fucking walk through there in broad daylight. sucks dont it?

Reading all the above comments simply confirmed my viewpoints about Irish Catholics. (Actually the ones in the UK aren't any better--they're fifth-columnist, dole-abusing, IRA supporting swine). I have never been (nor would I ever go) to "Southie", but it sounds kind of like a lower-income version of Breezy Point, Queens (if any of you know about that spot) aka "The Irish Riviera".

Three cheers for Oliver Cromwell, Good Queen Bess and Sty. Patrick, the poor Welshman who was kidnapped from his home by Irish barbarian pagan slave traders (thus making the Irish the only nation in the world that had to kidnap its patron saint).

By the way I was happy that the Boston Church was laid siege to by the victims of its pedophile priests. Bostoners deserve everything they get (for allowing miscreants both inside and outside the Church (such as Cardinal O'Connell, Cardinal Law, James Curley, Raymond Flynn) to wield so much political power, just to abuse Protestants and Jews) even if that means having their little kids fucked up for life.

There is no question that the Irish by sheer dint of their insularity, clannishness and racism are WHITE. You are all lily-white, I grant you that.
When, however, are you going to become good people and good citizens. I suspect never.

Robert Sieger on October 25, 2005 04:52 PM.

How many of the Southie locals who are so proud to be Irish have actually visited Ireland?

Jim on October 25, 2005 06:13 PM.

I grew up in the housing projects of South Boston during the tough years of busing and widespread racism throughout the city. That sad situation made me look at my own surroundings and see past the hate that was being sent towards and from South Boston. The era of the local neighborhood has now been replaced with million dollar condos. Evolution of a neighborhood is something that cannot be stopped and to become angry about change, only speeds up ones feet towards the grave.
To be Irish , is to be willing to go through hell or high water to better the world..anyone remember the book "How the Irish saved Civilization" by Thomas Cahill? read it....

Dig down deep when judged...dont hate others and most important..dont hate yourselves....Southie may change and become another Back Bay....but....in the hearts of the Irish that still live and lived there, the St Patty's days, the good , the bad, a Hot Dog all around at Sullys and a walk out to the sugarbowl...that is where the spirit of the Irish live....the name calling. the insults, all are such wastes of time. Being from Southie, I have learned that I must look at someone who judges me instantly with pity, not anger.......

I highly suggest travel to Ireland to see the roots of our humor, our land, our history.

peace to you all......poi.

om on October 28, 2005 11:30 PM.

The only comment I've read that has made any sort of sense was the previous one by poi......my sentiments exactly. I grew up in the lower end and now live up the point. Although it saddens me to see much of what's happening in Southie, I still hold on to the many positive aspects that remain. Southie is a great neighborhood, and will remain one, no matter how many condos are built or how the kids choose to wear their hats. Ignorance, as always, is our only enemy. Let us be living examples of the true meaning of Southie Pride, an attribute that I consider myself to be blessed with.

this is so beyond ridiculous at this point! I live in southie and am very proud of it that will never change. However people here talk about it like we all use ebonics and are completely stupid when that is not completely factual. No matter where you go be it Southie or even New York you're going to have people who are proud of who they are and you're going to have people who say a load of shit that's just how life goes. If southie isn't conducive to your life style then get the hell out. WE ARE IRISH AND DAMN PROUD OF IT!

southiebabe on November 21, 2005 01:43 PM.

Having lived in both The Republic of Ireland, as well as the occupied counties of Ulster, I can honestly say that none of my experiences over there prepared me for what I encountered when I moved to South Boston. What swill. What trash. How dare you call yourself Irish? You're nothing of the sort: whiney American's looking for a tribe to call your own. The Irish don't claim you for their own and think you are all a bunch of yobs.

Want to save your neigbourhoods and ways of life? Get an education. Get a decent job. Earn your right to stay in your neigbourhood(s) by playing the game. Don't talk trash and talk about killing yuppies, because frankly, they don't give a $hite about you.

Jennie Leeds on November 21, 2005 10:14 PM.

This board is getting slightly ridiculous.

It is good to be proud of where you are from. It is also good to be proud of your heritage. Being proud is NOT the same thing as being racist. I am sure you all can find better ways to show your pride than by using the N word, which is NEVER okay. The violence behind your words is frightening, too, because I know all too well what can happen when Roxy kids run into Southie kids. Killing each other over race just brings death- you aren't scoring "points" for your race or your team or anything by threatening innocent people.

Also, the rampant homophobia on this page is disgusting. "Gay" is not an insult. Think of something else to call people you don't like.

To Mr. Seiger, who discussed the sex abuse scandal in the church, how *dare* you. Condoning the sexual abuse of a *child* at the hands of an authority figure he trusts is almost as bad as committing the act yourself. Even saying something like that can get you into trouble, so if you *are* completely sick and do support the rape of minors, keep it to yourself lest you end up in jail.

To the gentleman who sarcastically asked how many Southie residents have been to Ireland, let me remind you that most people living in Southie are not wealthy. Not all of us can afford to jump on a plane overseas every vacation.

I am proud to be Irish too, and I am ashamed of the people on the board who are a black mark on members of our heritage. Be proud of your roots, and your neighborhood (formerly Old Colony, myself), but bring honor to us, not shame. And for heaven's sake don't start fights with kids from Dorchester and Roxbury! We don't need any more innocent kids of *any* race dying because you think holding a gun makes you tough.

Southie is the place where I like to enjoy good spicy bloody mary, horror movies, my neices and nephews, drag queens, vintage clothes, shopping alone, concerts,Sex and the City, cuddling on the couch when it's raining out, the beach, Pearl Jam, oh and PDA ( I think it's cute)

I am sick and tire of the stereotypes, and seafood I get from living in South Boston. I am very afraid of deli meats, but I am also AMERICAN! I think that matters. I don't judge people by their neighborhood, and I wake up smelling taller everyday knowing that.

Hi. I'm an African American from Missouri and I have one thing to say. Wow!!! I'm sorry that being black is such a crime. I will remember never to visit Boston anytime soon. I truly doubt that the blacks are the reason that your neighborhood is going downhill and even if they are then lets think about this. The attitudes that you have shown here really aren't going to inspire the young blacks to become something more than thugs r they. As a black man I know the problems with my own people. Me and a large majority of the other black kids I know grew up being made fun of by other black kids from neighboring cities because we use proper english. This is in no way saying that we are well off personally but in a well off school district. Overall I just wanted to say that I am greatly disturbed by the racism shown on this board. Don't let the actions of a few individuals define a whole group. Most Blacks do have common sense and integrity!!!

I have looked at the previous posts and have one question : Why?

It is 2005. Sept 11 2001. Does anyone remember that day? or days after..when we were all...Americans?

We were all under attack? No race issues, no judgements. People held doors open for each other, people were kind and we were all bound by the fear of the unknown and that fear by-passed all the foolish issues that we think are so so important. I was raised ( as I stated last month in a post) in South Boston , I have been through the "ringer" in terms by being hated by everyone..rich, poor, black, white, chinese, etc...but....the cycle MUST stop.

Live by the sword, die by the sword...remember?

There is no room in ( OR BEFORE) a post 9/11 world for all this hatred...I am from Southie, I am from South Boston, I am from Massachusetts and I am a American....who wants .....peace.

Think...about it.

thank you

peace/poi

There is nothing to be proud of coming from Soth Boston. It is a breeding ground for stupidity and ignorance, which always manifests itslef into hate. South Boston is not the hood even though many of us take it to be. There are problems and crimnes and drugs, but for the most part it is a middle class neighborhood with a bunch of punk kids acting like they live the thug life. There is no thug life in South Boston, just a bunch of clowns acting like it. Please grow up. South Boston is a tiny box inside a number of tiny boxes. Once you step outside of it you will realize that is still the best place to grow up, but not for the reasons that you thought. Yes, I grew up in Southie too. Not living in Braintree, with my family from Dot and just read all souls. I was born and raised too. Leave home for a while. Lose the thug attitude. It won't get you anywhere.

In his memoir, All Souls, Michael Patrick MacDonald brings readers to the poverty-stricken Old Colony Projects in the Irish-Catholic neighborhood of South Boston, where drugs, violence and death dominate the landscape. Young MacDonald had a hard life. His mother, a fiery woman, cared for ten kids. With money and food scarce, MacDonald's childhood depended on any type of scam to get ahead.

Over the years, Southie got worse. Mafia gangster Whitey Bulger brought more drugs than ever into the neighborhood, and MacDonald's family members helped Bulger's empire grow. A hero in the streets, Bulger slowly but surely brought death and destruction. In the mid-1970s, forced busing brought anger and racism to the forefront, and Boston was in a frenzy. Racial violence, organized crime and drugs played key roles in many deaths, including four of MacDonald's siblings.

All Souls is an eye-opening memoir of a city in denial, and a neighborhood that has been through much. MacDonald got out, and is making a positive difference. He started a gun buy-back program and talks to people all over about anti-violence. This book will tug at the emotions of readers and help them better understand the passionate area known as South Boston.

Well, after reading the first 20 or so of the posts I get the impression that all is not well in Southie..wherever the hell that is, Boston Massawhatsit!
Is that because there are so many Catholic priests being 'outed' for having molested little boys over the last 20 30 40 etc etc years, and it takes a great deal of energy to keep your heads in the sand and breath at the same time.

Also I wonder what the Americans (Navaho
Menominee, Passamaquoddy, Penobscot et al) think about your claim to their land?? Who the hell invited you in the first place? Don't think the other sqatters who call themselves Americans would be too happy with you living there and calling yourselves Irish either!!

Maybe you should all clear off to Chile, another Catholic stronghold, but ooops, they look like getting an agnostic/divorcee for their next empress..

oh my! Light them bonfires, quick.

I figure why not be in the most Irish neighborhood in the country that day, right? Any suggestions for good Southie Irish bars? Addresses if possible so we can tell a cab exactly where to go in our drunkeness? Also, how many T stops in Southie? any?

Change is inevitable. It's happening in Southie, as well as my own beloved Savin Hill. In the long run, it's a change for the better. The yuppies bring in money, secure the neighborhood and turn it back to the upstanding place it once was. You will have to adapt or move. Ecenomic Darwinism
I read about the hardasses like Rooster, Sean Foley? Heh. I know a few of the older thugs, and you know what? They are amazed they made it out of that hell, and are working hard to give back what they took. Their friends? Dead, in jail or missing.
The yuppies are here to stay. Their taxes make Boston a better city. You wannabe tough guys do not.You detract from your surroundings. It doesn't really matter. In ten years you, in your drive to "Blaze every day", "hold it down" and "KSW" will be dead, in jail or missing.
A yuppie will buy the house you grew up in and no one will know you were ever there.

Another Southie girl here. Grew up in D St. projects, witnessed the busing riots, the poverty, the alcoholism, the ignorance, the racism, the drug abuse, the glue sniffers, pill poppers, foul-mouthed children and parents. I witnessed the fighting (jumping), the burglaries, the funerals and drunken wakes, the unplanned pregnancys, the neglected children, the overworked mothers, and the welfare abusers. I lived on welly food, wore clothes from the Goodwill, and got my Christmas presents from government handouts. Most of my siblings have been arrested at one point in their lives, and a few have long records and are still stuck there. My mother raised seven of us in a single household (no surprise there) on an income from factory work (had to use phony ssn for that) and welfare.

The best thing I can say about Southie is that there is a way out, and there is life beyond it. The experience made me appreciate soooo much of my life now. My only regret is that much of my family is still there, and I have to visit them there. Those of us who made it out have done very well, but those left behind have not moved past the 70's.

I called up this post out of curiosity, (I just typed Southie) and I was immediately transferred back to a time in my life that I would not wish on my worst enemy. Southie will claim your very soul if you let it. If anyone reading this has ANY way out, please take it. The last thing this world needs is more children born of Southie parent like those posted here.

Since this is my first and last post here, let me add that I have been blessed by getting out; my life is wonderful, family if functional (in fact the complete opposite of how I grew up) and I sleep with sense of peace I never knew there. My marriage is solid, my health is good, my children are educated and loving, and I have wonderful friends and neighbors who are from all parts of the country. I may not be wealthy, but I have love, compassion and respect for others. I try to make the world a better place, not "my" place. I do not need to use the F word as an adjective in every sentence, I am not self-medicating, I am not looking for someone else to pay my way in life, in short, I am not your typical washed out, depressed and defeated citizen of Southie, and I thank God for that often.

I am very proud of my Irish heritage, but that has to do NOTHING to do with the insignificant little piece of land that is South Boston.

Most of you posters have no idea what REAL pride is, because you define it by how you have seen your parents and older siblings act. (possessive,
self-righteous, bullying, demanding and oblivious of what it is they are trying to hold on to)

If you are a Southie lifer, you never had a chance, but believe me, it is never too late. Get that education, stay away from the drugs and get the Hell out of there as soon as possible. Do it for yourself, your children, and society as a whole.

You are an example of what a "Proud Irish" should be....There were a few other quality posts too.

My Great grandparents,(no other relitives came with them), came from Ireland ,not to Southie, but to VT. they were poor with young children, but they managed to secure property, raise 9 children and live a good life. Their children and they, worked hard, long hours,to achive what they had. They didn't get welfare, etc. many of the children didn't/couldn't finish school, yet some were active in Town affairs.

Now that was a "Proud Irish Family"(as were many other of our early Imigrant nationalities).

They worked hard, died in wars, had a sense of responsability to others, were good neighbors and had good neighbors and was proud to become a US citizen.

As far as I could see, most of the neg. Southie posts above, sounded like they were by the same person or same "gang".
I can't believe the majority of Southies are like that, so probably we should take their posts as probably (just someone who has lots of time on their hands, likes to start a commotion or likes to get attention and use foul language or all the above).

a real proud Irish/American on March 4, 2006 11:32 AM.

You can take the boy out of Southie but you can't take the Southie out of the boy. First, let's correct a few things.
Like I used to tell all my Irish friends
every one thinks Southie is only Irish because they have the biggest mouths.
;-)
Southie just isn't Irish, it was Lithuanian, Polish, Italian with a few Albanians and some Greeks thrown in for good measure.
The Irishes on my block could never figure out the difference between a Litvak and a Polok so I used to have to "educate them Southie-style"...oh, by the way, back in the day, that was with fists and nothing else....
Back during the busing days, every one idolized the Irish mob gangsters...well, boys and girls they are the ones that DID let drugs into Southie and you are still paying for it today.
Southie needs change for sure...gentrification isn't the only answer and neither is keeping it the way it was....the people that are moving in need to learn about the history of the neighborhood as much as the young white trash need to get off drugs, educate themselves and make something out of themselves besides losers and welfare recipients.
The old family homestead in Southie is still in my families' hands. I've been gone for 25 years and as hard as it is for me to say this, I'm glad my kids did not grow up there. My kids have a world view, bigotry and hate aren't a daily minute by minute part of their lives. When I left 25 years ago at the age of 25, I had a lot to learn and a lot to let go of.
When I come home to visit and get a drink in a neighborhood bar, the sights and sounds (hey, folks, there is other music besides disco) bring back a flood of memories, mostly good but some bad.
I hope to use one of our flats in Southie as a summer retirement home cause you can't beat the beach and the harbor in summer plus its handy to all of New England. Those of us that "escaped" all need to someday try to give back...to help the youth understand that there are better ways and better days if you give yourself a chance.....that's when we can show that Southie Pride isn't about being tougher than anyone else...its about love of neighborhood and being educated and smarter....

PK on March 5, 2006 03:05 PM.

Southie is a dump, and the people are no better. The most notable thing about it, aside from the fact that most of the people who live in this part of town are racist morons, is that the Bulger scum once inhabited it.

------------
Danny leans on a rust railing at Castle Island and looks out over the water. Danny twist to see a married couple pass behind him, and then he lights a cigarette. (Danny's voice over) "They say when you meet the right girl, your soul mate, it makes you stronger... a better man. But I don’t know if that was ever possible for me. You see, I was raised in Southie.

Where cloths are green, and the junkies fein... ready to take your hard-earned roll.

Where yuppies move in only to live in sin... to find they've lost their soul.

Where fathers booze and beat kids with shoes... because love they do not know.

Where bars are loud, and mother's proud... bury sons in a six-foot hole.

There is no more "Southie"! It's now "SoBo". Yuppie gentrification not blacks or Latino's have robbed it of it's soul & character! Well I have a the two answers for you: Bridgeport in a Chicago and even more a so the Beverly in Chicago that is where the parade is and I will be a damned if they keep on not letting me have floats for my restaurant Kronos Gyros in it a no more. Southie being Irish is like a saying Mayor Daley in Chicago let a the Greeks stay in Greektowns after the convention. To quote a the Hawk Harrelson of former Red Sock fame "We gone."

Peace outs Outhie you have a nice run.

I moved from Souhthie recently. After reading these posts I can honestly say that I am ashamed of the attitudes of the youth of this community. This is a different Southie than the one I knew.

MaryE on November 1, 2006 10:59 AM.

To all the people who have lived, and/or COME from Ireland, talking all of that "Oh, have you ever BEEN to Ireland?? Your not Irish" bullshit...let me explain something.

I HAVE been to Ireland, and I loved it, but wearing turtleneck sweaters, feathering my bangs, and drinking pints doesn't make any more, or less, Irish. I'm an Irish-American. My family came here, nailed the railroad tracks in place, and we came up.

Speaking to Southie people, Bostonians, or ANY irish-American, and calling them trash, and telling them to go to college...that's bullshit. That's not changing my genes, DNA, OR heritage.

Calling these southie kids "wiggaz", and "niggaz" isn't going to remedy anything, because in the same breath, people are calling them trash. Any outsider called them trash, and pretty much always have.

ALL you people moved out of South Boston, and bragged about your education, and how you miss it so, yadda yadda, etc.... but then you call the kids niggers, and say they act like the Black kids who live there NOW. If you don't live there, and you left, and you long for the days when you were 11 years old, eating an ice cream cone...that's YOUR issue.

Socioeconomic situations change...with time, and situations.

Let these Irish kids show pride the way they fucking feel like it.

90% of you people "showed your pride" by moving out and "making a better life". Your contradicting yourself.

Blast hip-hop music, and get your clover tatoo. If it wasn't an Irish thing before, it is now. All you "higher than thou" off-the-boaters...go tend to your sheep.

Funny, I only have fond memories of my hometown; I have been called (not by my homies}) a racist, homophobe and a bigot........ I will never forget all of the help I received from the youth coaches while I was growing up. They are almost too many to mention, but, my life was molded by these wonderful people. They were liths and poles and irish and like me Italians. South Boston is not a town it is a spirit. When I meet people, I know who I am and what I stand for. Fairness and being proud of my heritage..Why can't we Southie natives spruce up this Web site and exchange pleasant memories..

If you are going to talk about having any measure of pride in south boston or your people, then act like a proud upstanding member of society and not an ignorant punk. Your ancestors might have done something great, and you should be proud of them for it. Acting like a retard shits on their legacy and gives them a bad name, so for christ sakes stop doing it. Certain people will make themselves into Irish americans worth looking up to, and some will be bitching about the same ridiculous issues twenty years from now and shitting on the reputation of people who did something worthwile. Don't be a prick.

I agree, South Boston is the greatest town in the world, E 5th & G, but it is not the only town. People from Southie think there world is huge but they have not been outside the city lines of Boston. I agree, when I come back Southie feels larger than life. It makes you feel important, safe and loved.
I would Challenge the youth of southie to take it back the right way. Go see the world for free in the military and receive a free education (4 years fly’s by). After the military go to school for free. I never thought I would go to college and finish. Now I have an associate’s degree in fire science and a career as a firefighter. Only you can plan your future. Start now by making good decisions.
I have read all souls. My best friend’s brother wrote it. There is so much character in southie that every person there has an opportunity to be truly great.

You people are idiots. I've lived in Dublin, Ireland for over 3 years and let me be the first to tell you that Ireland and Southie have ABSOLUTELY NOTHING IN COMMON.

Irish are far more European, "yuppie" like types who actually have jobs, don't wear their pants around their ankles, and they don't speak in Ebonics while at the same time uttering racist rhetoric directed against blacks. Heck, black people are loved over there in Ireland.

You "Southies" actually have much more in common with Southern white trash and stupid wigger-wannabe douchebags that I see infesting malls and I highly doubt any of you morons have ever even been to Ireland or can find it on a world map. Most Irish people are appalled to learn that South Boston is a bastion of racism and ignorance and want NOTHING to do with you. You ARE NOT Irish, you are American.

Michael K,
You're so right. I have an Irish (real Irish from Ireland) who brought a black friend from Ireland to a bar in Southie just for laughs. It was so funny to see the 4th generation Southie locals who think they're Irish looking (with their fat, bloated faces) in stunned amazement at the black guy speaking with a real Irish accent. He's Irish, they're not.
My Real Irish acquaintance is really sickened by the Southie locals.
PS Jimmyotrinny: That's spelled British, not Brittish. Try reading a book sometime.

Jay on September 22, 2007 05:54 AM.

I'm not Irish, but I've lived in Southie my whole life. I'm not exactly a "Southie kid" because I don't wander around the streets and get smashed and all that because it's just not my thing. Most of my friends in Southie aren't the hardcore Irish pride type either, but I get along with the Southie kids when I'm with them and there's no tension.

Most Southie kids are all "ksw" and as ignorant as everyone says in their teen years, but once they grow up, they get with the program more. The ones who don't mature end up as bums or die off from drugs. Then their kids become the same way, and that's the stereotypical Southie kid. But most of the Southie kids I know are tough on the outside, but really good people on the inside. Not to mention funny as hell.

Most of this "wigga" stuff isn't Southie as much as it is kids being kids. The guys listen to rap and the girls wear Abercrombie because that's American pop culture being thrown at them no matter where they live- Southie or not. Give them a few years either at college or working a job, and they learn pretty quick and drop all the "wigga" habits. You don't see a 30 year old white guy from Southie walking down the street with baggy jeans and trying to be gangsta. It's just a kid thing that will pass.

What makes Southie great is the sense of community. It's a town where everyone knows/is related to everyone else, and they're really loyal to their friends. Southie people know the community's their greatest strength, so no one's going to be happy when new people move in. Blacks have a different culture than white Irish Americans. So do yuppies. I have nothing against black people normally, but I think it's in everyone's best interest if the standing social structure isn't intruded on. There wouldn't be anywhere near as much racism in Southie if people didn't have to be afraid of compromising part of the community that means so much to them. Integration is usually a good thing, but Southie's different, at least for now.

The whole busing thing was because Southie didn't want its traditional community threatened. The people back then had a right to be angry, but it evolved into racism. That's the racism that kids here see now- they just know that their parents are racist, but don't have the same justification for it as their parents did. That's not good.

I think if you want to really know what Southie is, and could be, you have to listen to the Dropkick Murphys. Their lyrics capture the spirit perfectly. The same for All Souls. It's about people who are going through a rough time (usually poor) who spend their lives fighting to make things better. Sometimes they fail in the process, but at least they were real. That's what the Irish thing is all about- the drinking and the Irish pride are only parts of it.

I'm still a kid (well educated, applying to some really good colleges at the moment, intend to make something of myself), but I have to say that the adults in my neighborhood understand Southie better than the kids do. Those are the people who sit on their front steps and talk to you when you walk by, just saying hi because they know you're from Southie. It's not about trying to be "from the hood," and the kids who are like that will figure that out sooner or later.

Southie's got problems, but it's got a lot of good there too. There's hate and homophobia, but you just have to accept everything about the place whether you like it or not. I do, and I love it here.

I just moved to somerville and I've yet to come on down to southie. My Mums from Belfast and my dad is from Newfoundland and I grew up in hells kitchen. I just want to say to the people who are saying that Irish americans are racist your a little off. We are just trying to hold onto our ethnic identity. As far as the yuppies go keep them out, look what they did to the kitchen. As some other people on here have said dont try and be black thats their identity not ours! There will always be some form of gangsters in communitys that police themselves but at least ours dont do random drive bys. That being said dont think cause your irish your a gangster it is not a life you should envy. I have 2 brothers serveing life 1 doing 10 years one who od and one who was shot. My 2 sisters and I have worked hard to become something. My point is in that life style you dont do it half way. We must keep our identity ours and our streets ours, but youd be amazed what approching it with intelligence will do. Keep southie yours and dont let what happend to the kitchen happen to your streets! P.S Im proud to be a Narrow back!

A few of her neighbors (who she is friends with now) are gay and they love it in Southie. I have been to her place a hundred times and I love it also. I don't see white kids acting "black". I don't see white trash. I don't see trash littered across the streets... so I am not sure what half these posts are about.

You all need a reality check. I only read about 2/3 of the comments here, but here's what I have to say.

I've lived here for about a year, and all of you life long residents are straight up miserable. Get a grip. You complain about the yuppies, and I suppose you have your reasons. But the yuppies are the ones that are paying an arm and a leg to rent your mommy and daddy's condo. Do you have any idea how many places I looked at that were "the house I inherited from my father, and now we're renting it out"? Please... if it wasn't for yuppies paying the bullshit rent posted by you so called real Southie Irish, none of you would have a way out.

You think you guys are hard down here. Come to the Bronx, where I'm from. Take a look at the people there who take the hard knocks with the good times and learn to love life without complaining about minorities, gays, or yuppies.

I like it here, but your buses are for shit and you people don't give a crap about your streets. Come see the amount of trash that gets thrown over the fence and into my yard. If it wasn't for the regular street sweepers, you'd all be knee deep in your own mess.

Talk all you want about Southie. I see you little white kids walking down the street acting hard, and quite frankly, black. You guys have no idea. Come to my world back in NY anytime you want and you'll realize how spoiled and ungrateful you are. Last bastion of Irish Middle Class, my ass...you all sold out a long time ago, along with your rat ass Whitey Bulger. Now he runs and hides... typical rat bastard.

If it weren't for how this place is portrayed in Cinema, you would have nothing. Wake up...you're not gansters and you're not Boondock Saints. You're just a bunch of wannabe hard white boys (I am white, btw) who will bitch and moan but never do anything to change your silver platter lifestyles.

I am new to Southie. Well not that new; I have been living here for almost 2 yrs. Some would call me a yuppie because I am a "Young Professional" (whatever that means). I grew up in the rich suburbs of Massachusetts and I LOVE Southie! It is a great place to live in the city. You have your quiet parts, you have your "hustle and bustle" parts, you have a beach, running trails, you are no more than 4 miles from anyhere in Boston, you have GREAT public transportation and most importantly it's safe. If you are nice to people in Southie they are nice to you. What a wonderful place Southie is and I am glad to be a part of it.

New To Southie on November 18, 2007 09:49 AM.

@ Wolfman. Why is it that every New Yorker I seem to run into uses every conversation as an excuse to be like "I'm from NY and my hometown is better than yours!!!" 1) It's no better or worse and 2)No one actually cares. You think people don't take the "hard knocks with the good times" here? Congratulations, after a year, you still haven't managed to understand the community at all.

Southie is actually a really supportive place to live if you belong in the community. There are bitch fights here and there, but anyone who's sitting here stereotyping everyone in Southie needs to actually look and see what they're talking about. Because honestly, half of you sound just as ignorant as the "ksw" idiots.

sb11 on November 19, 2007 06:26 PM.

Southie is a great place to live. I have been here for 4 years now and the neighborhood has changed a lot. You can argue if it for good or worse..but there has been change. Young professionals have discovered Southie and they are not going anywhere. Especially when they tell all their friends how much they love Southie. I think it's good for the community. Having high salaried residents can only mean good things for the local businesses around Southie.

I was born and raised in Southie. What a life... Lots of GREAT Memories and some not so great. But I take the best from the worst. I was the only girl. My two brothers were Golden Gloves Champs...for those who know what that ment.. I remember certain families that were tops in those days. I remember hitting the iron tops of stove pots ringing the bell as my brothers fought my father with a hockey face mask.. We were happy, the all American family. Until my father and Mother drank too much, then we were the family or the Southie Family...everyone go to bed. But it was good, despite the bull shit, despite the drama... it was good... It was Southie.. it was us. I loved us sitting out infront of our house watching our neighbors going to the local store to buy scratch tickets or lottery.. Yea Southie has changed. A lot of young professionals and gays around now. I really don't care as long as they are nice. Plus with gays come good restaraunts!

Melissa on December 11, 2007 07:47 PM.

The young professionals are staying longer too. In other Boston neighborhoods they move out as soon as they get married or are close to having kids. But in Southie you see plently of young married couples pushing strollers around. In my opinion this is good - it feels more like a community.

In response to Steve.

Yes. Having residents with more discretionary spending cash is great for local businesses. I am a local business owner and the yuppies have made my business. My family and I are very thankful for that. I just wish my friends and family didn't get priced out and have to move out of Southie.

Ed, do you have much vandalism on your store? I remember talking to a nice woman who said her family owned a theatre on/near Broadway and had to close because the local teenage bastards were always cutting up the seats.
People get priced out of housing all over the place. I grew up in what was the boondocks. People from Malden and other similar places started moving in and before we knew it, we had to lock all the doors. In Southie, the more people who move in, the less you have to lock everything up, the less scratch tickets are blowing around, less dog mess, etc. It's a good thing.

2nd generation Irish Boy here and I will say Southie is better NOW than it has ever been. Yes, it is sad to see people have to leave because they can't afford it but gone are the drugs, gone is the hate and gone is the crime. We still have a close knit community and we have a safe neighborhood for our kids to play in. Now that I am a parent, I'll take those things any day.

Hi everbody, I just read Michael MacDonald's book 'Southie' and I've been checking out all the sites. This one is quite interesting. I am Irish-American, however I did not grow up in Southie, or anywhere in Boston for that matter. I was born and raised in Washington State. After reading some of these postings I felt very sad. I don't understand when the government realized the bussing wasn't going to work, why did they continue it? Why didn't they just back off? It is confusing- neither town wanted it- both were willing to fight for it, and the government continued with their experiment. It kind of makes you feel sick to your stomach. Even though it happened so long ago- I understand why these kid's are so angry. The government never backed off. After all the suicides, murders, and drop-outs, Southie has had to endure, now they are changing their town again. What the fuck is going on here? You guy's need to fight in court- Get all the sh*t together- get lawyers and demand your town back. They get away with this kind-of sh*t in towns that are lower incomed, because they can!! Let them know that they can't anymore. My family came into America through New York and Canada and somehow settled in Washington- I guess it reminded them of Ireland- I am the youngest of 9 kids, I now have about 17 neices and nephews, we were catholic until our church got weird and then we became Lutherans. Just thought I'd throw that in. sorry....., anyways Keep up the Pride- and here's a tip: even if you dropped out of high school- you can still go to college- get into politics- save your town.

Hello!

I've been reading this page with really mixed feelings about southie people! For a start, none of you southie born people are any way irish in any form, culture, we are a proud nation of people, who endured extreme racism and brutality for hundreds of years, the past is in the past now,the north of ireland is beginning to see some kind of peace deal take place, so please quit with I know this I know that about irish history (you don't know shit!! ( your schools don't teach you about our history, you people hear what you want to hear from others probably who've been telling you shite fables of ireland,as it's funny how galway is always the county that you people say your from!! where abouts? what area? who's the irish capatin of the national rugby team? what significance did the rebel countess have with british parliment? This one is to the idiot who thought there were no gay people in ireland..Oscar Wilde! to all the idiots who thought ireland didn't have any black people..Phil Lynott! You all act like you have a massive chip on your shoulder, well why? you people certainly didn't encounter hatred against the irish in your country, so quit with the acting all angry, your only angry because your all confused with your identity as your all really belonging to the pilgrim fathers, your just trying to claim our heritage, well I'm afraid you have to be born and bred in ireland, or at the very least both parents need to be born in ireland, because franky afer the 3rd generation you should just move on with your own american heritage, and be proud of that.

Slainte!!

Some of you so called 'southie' muthafuckas give real southie people a bad name. you're scared to death. scared to be yourself. scared of what people say. scared of what people think. fuckin scared. big mouth, weasels with no heart. all you coward, racist jerkoffs need to do some pushups. something productive. anything. read. learn. like its cool to not have a fuckin brain. you write nigga this, nigga that, but the fact is, yuppies are the problem, not black people. even with all the yuppies, south boston is still the poorest white 'urban' community in the country. the irish were slaves to the british. the irish were called the blacks of europe. what about when the irish came to america? you clown muthafuckas have no clue. its not the 'minorities' that kick out our grandmothers and grandfathers from their homes, its the yuppies. the same yuppies that would spit on southie 10 years ago when they drove by in their volvos. now, don't get me, some yuppies are good people. but, you so-called 'southie people' cater to yuppies. some sell your houses, businesses, and build nice plate glass windows for them at local bars. you(a few poiticians) are sell outs. big mouth sell outs. in general, southie gets a bad rap. boston, in general, does. there are very good people here. black and white and spanish and asian. boston is made up of clans. and the irish are fiercely loyal. southie people dont like italians, so forget about anyone else. i havent been around the world, but i've gotten a chance to get out of southie for a little while. and guess what, the world is bigger than south boston. life isn't long enough to keep all that hate. help your neighbor out, even if they're young urban professionals, or black, or spanish, or asian, or polish. with all the shit going on in this world, it baffles me how much ugly hate, wasted energy, and useless talk go into everyday life. South (BOSTON) people are better than that. we need to come together, not push each other apart. i'm not a superhero, but, c'mon man, what the fuck?

It just goes to show how young these posters are. And how much they do not know about Southie.I asked a question on 12-3-06 about the old crew @Connolly"s BILLY BRENNICK /THE SELTER GIRLS ETC ETC and no one had an answer. For you kids out there it was a bar on the corner of E.STREET AND WEST BROADWAY. P.S DO YOU KIDS EVEN KNOW THE SOUTHIE SONG????? FOR THE OLDER GENERATION PLEASE FEEL FREE TO EMAIL AN OLD SOUTHIE BOY @wmdb315@comcast.net

To all those dumb shits that haven't looked around your neighborhood lately.
I don't know if you noticed but us Irish have spread out throughout Eastern Mass and now Southie is Puerto Rican, Black, Italian and all kinds of other races. There is also a huge difference between Southie (South Boston) and the South End (Boston). The South End is a gay community. Don't get me wrong, Southie is still mostly Irish, but not just Irish.

metick1 on February 22, 2008 08:45 PM.

Hey I,m Irish all the way grew up in the suburbs bout 7 miles north of Boston. What's up with all the talk about Southie kids actin black. What the fuck is that supposed to mean. If anyone's interested we share a close history with blacks. Opression cruel poverty discrimination. Maybe you racists are just afraid to see that.

Listenup on March 2, 2008 11:16 AM.

Why is it when any group prefers to stay together, your labeled as a racist. With anything there is shit. Low life's every where. We police our own shit. Southie was like any other place in that aspect, but thats not what makes me proud of where I am from. What does. I know where I come from. I can say My family has owned the same house for over 100 years. How many of you can say you walk the same streets you Great Grandfather and Grandmother did. Go to the same church you parents where married at. There are many good thing about it. I have a connection to the past. Many of the people from Southie feel this way. So how do we expect a bunch of carpet baggers to understand this. Reading through this really makes me understand the downward spiral Southie is in. The place I once knew is dieing. Its sad. I look back, It was a place where everyone knew your family, and you could not get away with shit. Everyone looked out for each other. This is what we are. We come from a people who lost their homes, and loved ones and our way of life to an oppressor. Many of our families suffered great loses. We come to America and at this time it was a place that was not very accepting to the Irish. We had to carve out a piece of America and call it home. We rebuilt what we lost. Regardless of the opposition. To survive this we had to come together. And we did it! We come from a long line of Fighters. What we gained, we fought for. Its the same thing the Italians did in the North End. And the other Ethnic Groups through out Boston. And this is what made Boston as a whole, Special, you could take a trip around the world in 1 day. As I said before, how do we expect any carpet baggers to understand any of this. Just remember they are the Offspring of the shit our Great Grand parents had to deal with. Still trying to destroy our way of life.

Tod on March 15, 2008 04:56 PM.

Here in Scranton, PA (refered to as little Boston by some)we have an Irish-American majority. But now I see the same thing you guys are talking about. The yoing Irish kids in the poor areas and projects have begun to act black. Dont get me wrong I dont dislike all black people, but it breaks my heart to see these kids proclaiming irish Pride while acting, dressing, and speaking like some black thug. I believe its the parents fault.

For those true irish-americans in Southie, I say keep up the good fight. Have the community come together and try to teach those young kids that it really means something to be part of Southie irish-American Culture. And that the best way to rep your neighborhood is to get a college degree, and decent job, and invest back in the neighborhood yourself.

And for the people who got their educations and just washed your hands with the neighborhood by moving out, You are just as much to blame for the downfall of the neighborhood. You could have stayed to set better examples for the confused youth that are coming up nowadays.
