Common
The green in the center of a town (Boston Common is perhaps the most famous). So-called because it was land held in common for residents for uses such as cow grazing; however, one rarely sees cows meandering about Boston Common these days.
On Boston Common, the cows have been replaced by WWI naval mines:

Most towns in Massachusetts have at least small commons left from the same era.

Also, underneath the common is perhaps the best pahkin laht in the city. Not sketchily narrow parking or anything. My friend fits his f-150 in pretty easily. And reasonably priced at $10 for the night, and never totally full even on game nights. Within walking distance of lots of fun stuff such as my main destination, the fanueil bars district.

If you hear people talk about the "Boston Commons," it's a dead give away they are not from Boston. All Bostonians know there is only one "Common."
