Central Ahtery
The sclerotic north-south highway that separates the North End from the rest of the city. Being replaced by the Big Dig.
The Central Artery is a scary bi-level piece of highway. Always get stuck in slow traffic and get to fantasize about what would happen if there was an eathquake. The big landmark when we used to go into the city on school field trips was the Boston Sand & Gravel co, which is right in the middle of the cris crossing, multileveled exits.

The section of highway (I-93) you are refering to is actually the upper and lower decks. The actual artery is underground now as part of the Big Dig. The artery proper runs from the intersection of the Pike to the Zakim Bridge. It must be really confusing to visitors and new transplants that I-93 changes names 3 times in a mile and a half. (The Expressway, The Artery (although now it seems to be called "The Tunnel"), The Upper/Lower Deck).
