119 Merrimac
119 Merrimac St.

The building was a rooming house now vacant and partially demolished. The floor sags in places. Patches cover holes in the side of the building. Rats run about outside. They're on a month-to-month lease and demise has been predicted for well over a decade. There's a lineup outside when they open at noon - some are still there late into the night, every night. At slow times there's often a patron or two dozing with head on the on the bar. It's dark, smoky, tables & stools shaky and the bathrooms impressively foul. Aside from all of that it's a fun & friendly place. In a town where the gay community is notorious for attitude there's rarely any at the 119. City Hall Staffer, Mass General Dr, Telephone Repairman, T Driver, or no-visible-means-of-support, they can be found here. Suit , t-shirt, flannel, leather & drag all pass through in a night (though they consider themselves to be a leather & bear bar.) The jukebox is decent, and the DJs (!) good though dancing went away long ago. Oh and the drinks? Nothing fancy but they're reasonably priced and if the bartender recognizes ya they're strong. This is the place you mother warned you about but hell, it's a guilty pleasure. -- Maggard
