Gary discusses the way the MBTA emptied Alewife for several hours for what turned out to be a bag of melted ice:

... To deal realistically with abandoned items, the T needs to develop a measured set of responses. In the case of the typical abandoned shopping bag, this would mean something less than emptying the whole station for hours. Such a policy could actually encourage people to report what they see. But commuters are always at the bottom of the MBTA's list of priorities, as it showed before and during the Democratic Convention.
