Durgin-Park, serving meals since before you were born.
Today, "festival markets" are a dime a dozen - every city, it seems, has a collection of old brick buildings turned into chic little stores and endless restaurants.

But the one that blazed the path was Boston's Quincy Market. Back in the mid-1960s, James Rouse, then a city planner, had a revolutionary idea: Instead of abandoning downtown to decay, why not build a fun marketplace that would not only attract tourists, but keep workers downtown after dark.

Fortunately, Boston already had a set of buildings almost perfectly designed for that: Faneuil Hall and Quincy Market. The former, built in 1742 as a wholesale market, also has a large meeting hall upstairs - where ol' Sam Adams inspired (or inflamed, depending on your point of view) the locals into taking up arms against the crown. When Boston began growing rapidly in the 1800s, it built Quincy Market to provide additional market space.

Today, Quincy Market is the most visited tourist destination in Boston. It's changed over the years - it's a bit less Boston, a bit more Anymall, U.S.A. (Abercrombie & Fitch has its own building). But don't worry - it's still very much the vibrant place. There are street performers and zillions of people. The food court is probably the best food court anywhere - lots of original local eateries and stalls. And you'll still find more lobster items (from candy lobsters to lobster T-shirts to stuffed toy lobsters) than anywhere else in the world.

Getting there: Take the Green or Blue Lines to Government Center, then walk down the steps to the right of City Hall (that big ugly concrete thing that you can't miss as soon you get out of the subway. Or take the Green or Orange lines to Haymarket and then walk away from the other big ugly concrete thing (a parking garage) and past the six glass towers of the Holocaust memorial.

Planning to visit Boston on the 22nd of May for our long Canadian week-end, with a girlfriend and other people. Is there some kind of brochure I could get before from the Chamber of Commerce or other? We will tour the "Freedom Trail" and spend some time at the Quincy Market and Salem Witch Museum. We would like to know what exactly is in the Market since we plan to eat our meals there. Thanks,

Need a break from corporate America and those way to expensive theater tickets, then this is the place to be, the food is great and the entertainment is as high quality as it gets and it is free...

I recently went to Boston and went to Quincy Market one evening to grab a bite to eat. I stumbled upon Durgin Park and it was the best place I have ever been to. The food was classic Yankee cooking and the atmosphere was terrific. We sat at the bar and had our food served to us there while we chatted up with the bartender who was hysterically funny. I am definitely reccomding that place to everyone I know!!!

Quincy Market is over rates. Prices ARE HORRIBLE. Not very good shops. Very good food though.

Hey ya'll
Quincy market is AWESOME...well combined w/the shops and venders of Fanueil Hall any ways...how can ya beat it, food and shopping!!!! But really, i spent a weekend in Boston w/a bunch of people from school and we spent one day at Fanueil Hall and Quincy Market and we had a blast. Whether it was because of the good time we had the night before or that we were just happy to be together away from school, we had a lot of fun. Ok so it may sound lame, but, that place holds a lot of special memories for me, i hope it can do the same for you!!!!!

Please respond ASAP.
Thank you!

Boston is a Very Exciting and Family styled City. I have visited many Cities in the states and over seas. If you are from out of the area - or never been to Boston (The City) before and are looking for some kind of input as to where to stay, Cost, eating Est, Shopping and main attractions,... I would be more than happy to share what I can to make your planned trip all that you had hoped it to be. Boston is a wonderful - wonderful City... Don't miss out... !

Going to Boston for the very first time, my wife and I were directed to Quincy Market. What an amazing gem of a place! The entire building is saturated with the smells generated by the myriad of small market-style restaurants. Coffees, pizzas, swordfish kabobs, Boston chowda in bread bowls and, my personal favorite, the cannolis. If you are visiting Boston, this is definitely a must see, do and eat!

IF YOUR GOING TO BOSTON, AND YOU'RE VISITING QUINCY MARKET, YOU MUST TRY THE CLAM CHOWDER IN THE BREAD BOWL. THIS IS NOT A "WANT" IT'S A "NEED"!
-THE CLAM CHOWDER SHOPS ARE LOCATED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE QUINCY MARKET BUILDING AND YOU GET TO SIT DOWN IN ONE OF THE OLDEST DINGING PLACES IN THE US! THE INSIDE OF THE BUILDING IS BASICALLY A REALLY LONG HALL FILLED WITH DIFFERENT RESTAURANTS. IT'S REALLY FUN TO EAT YOUR SOUP OUT OF A BOWL MADE OF BREAD, WHICH YOU CAN THEN EAT!
AGAIN, THIS IS A MUST IF VISITING BOSTON'S QUINCY MARKET. ITS LIKE GOING TO ITALY AND TRING AUTHENTIC SPAGHETTI, OR FRANCE AND EATING A BAGUETTE, OR GOING TO JAPAN AND TRYING SUSHI, OR GOIGN TO SCOTLAND AND TRYING HAGGIS,....OKAY, WELL YOU GET THE POINT. (DON'T TRY HAGGIS)

I was just in Boston yesterday (June 22, 2007) with a couple of friends and we saw this amazing trio of musicians, two on guitar and one on pan pipes. I wanted to look at their CD but we were on the wrong side of the walkway and decided we would stop by when we came around again after seeing some shops. But by the time we did, it was raining and they were gone. Does anyone know who they were? I did get a photo and it says "INCA" on their table blanket. Thanks, I'd love to see if I can buy their CD.
